Craig's Picture of the Day

The busiest shopping day in Los Alamos occurs once a month at the government
salvage yard. Every third Thursday, artisans, locals, visitors and lab geeks
franticly assemble behind the yellow rope and somewhat patiently await the
12 O'clock "go." As they wait, an offical announces the yard rules: No Running,
No Fighting, No buying of other's marked items, You must purchase what you mark.
The rope is dropped and the tool laidened, marker equipped mob fast-walks into the lab leftover
bounty. A feeding frenzy occurs as office furniture, electronics, raw aluminium,
gieger counters, temperature chambers, etc. are gobbled up whole. Many items are sold
by weight not by value, which makes pricing interesting for those lightweight items.
Don't want to buy the whole thing, fine. Take it apart and cut out what you want.
This activity is not for the faint of heart. John, Pam, Maggi, Alfred, Bob, Craig,
Brian and Steve await the GO signal. Buy of the day, a government steel desk purchased
for $15 by Alfred and Steve for their UT Austin office. Lucky they had a truck.
