Vintage Hardware Repair at Internet Speed

OK, so I have these two old HP LaserJet IIP's collecting dust for years.
I originally bought the left one at Georgia Tech in 1990 for $1800 (with Appletalk and Postscript)
I bought the right one for parts, price $10 at a Ridgway thrift shop.
After installing CUPS on my Linux desktop, I decided to fire up the
old IIP for some high quality laser printing action.

Only to find this printer error. No problem, use the other one.
Damn the luck, same damn error on my 'spare' printer. Sup wit dat?

Google "12 open or no EP" returns this
Try a new 10ufd cap on the small circuit card that the sensors and density adjustment connect to.
This cap will probably have a high esr. The 12 error is this printers weak point. You can either replace
the density board (about $15.00 ) or you could try cutting jumper JP701. The circuit is an or function for
fan failure and the two sensors located to the right. But the jumper cut always works, it eliminates the fan
failure circut, but try the electrolitic cap fix.

OK, what the heck? I'll try replacing that cap.

Open the back

Open the front, remove two screws

Pop the top

Here's our board and there's the capacitor. That little greenie!

Unsolder

Go to the Ouradio Shack, my lab. Find the capacitor box and get 10uF.

Solder and clip

Replace circuit board and power up

Wow, good as new!! A new record for vintage electronics repair.
Error report, find information, disassembly, find part, replace part,
assemble then power up, complete in 5 minutes! Fixed both in 10 minutes.

How do I know which printer is which?
My original printer has a Richard Scary Business Man sticker.
